Carrio help

These are the usual bumps, and how to get past them.

Installing the Android APK

Android asks before it installs an app from outside the Play Store. When it does, allow your browser to install unknown apps. On most phones that's a switch that shows up right there, or under Settings → Apps → your browser → Install unknown apps.

Carrio keeps itself up to date: when there's a new version, press Update on its home screen. The first time, Android asks you to let Carrio install apps, the same way it asked your browser. Your pairing and tags stay put.

Play Protect warning

The version on this site should install without one. If Play Protect still stops to ask about it, that's because Carrio is new and isn't on the Play Store yet. If the APK came from this site, tap More details, then Install anyway. The wording varies a little between phones.

Don't do that for an APK from anywhere else.

If an earlier beta was blocked with "App blocked to protect your device", that's because it asked for notification access, and in some countries Play Protect blocks apps from websites that ask for that. The version here doesn't, so download it again and it installs.

Windows protected your PC

If a blue box says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway, but only for a file you downloaded from this site. Windows shows that for apps it doesn't recognise yet, because Carrio doesn't have a paid signing certificate. That's planned before a wider launch.

Pairing

Open Carrio on your PC and the QR code is already showing. On your phone, tap Scan QR code and point it at the screen.

If the camera won't play along, tap Type the code instead, then type the PC address and the 6-digit code shown on your PC. The code renews by itself, and your PC keeps the old one working while you type.

The Windows app ready to pair: a QR code inside a countdown ring, three short steps, the PC address and a 6-digit codePairing: the phone's camera view lined up on the QR code shown on the PC, with Type the code instead underneath

My phone can't reach the PC

  • Check both are on the same Wi-Fi.
  • In Windows, set the network to Private.
  • If Windows Firewall asks, allow Carrio.
  • Switch off any VPN on either device.
  • Guest networks and some mesh setups keep devices apart, so try your main network.
  • If your router gave the PC a new address, tap "New address? Pair again" on your phone. The QR code on your PC updates by itself.

Carrio isn't in the Share menu

  • Scroll along the list of apps. The first time, it can be further down.
  • Update Carrio on your phone, because older versions didn't have Share.
  • Share a link, not a photo or a file. Most apps have a Share option that sends the link.
  • For now, Carrio only sends YouTube videos to your PC. Other pages are coming.

Notification access

The version on this site doesn't ask for notification access, so there's nothing to allow. To send a video from your phone to your PC, share it to Carrio.

The Play Store version, when it's out, will ask for it, so Open on PC can see what YouTube is playing. It explains why before it asks. Here's exactly what it'll read.

It says the video's in a background tab

Carrio reads the tab at the front in Chrome. Bring the video's tab to the front and tap again.

It opened a YouTube search instead

That only happens with Open on PC, which comes with the Play Store version. YouTube's app only shares the title and channel of what's playing, so your PC sometimes has to search for it. If it can't be sure which video it is, it opens the results and you pick it from there. Sharing a video to Carrio never does this, because the link says exactly which video it is.

Tapping a tag does nothing

  • Check NFC is switched on in your phone's settings.
  • Wake your phone and unlock it. Android only reads tags then.
  • Move the tag around the back of the phone. The reader's usually near the middle or the cameras.
  • Thick or metal cases can block it, and so can metal under the tag.
  • Use NTAG213, NTAG215 or NTAG216 tags.

Smart went the wrong way

Smart picks a direction from what's playing where. Whichever side is playing wins, and if both are, the one you touched most recently wins. If it really can't tell, your phone asks.

With the version on this site, your phone can't see what it's playing, so Smart goes by your PC: if your PC's playing something, it comes to your phone. Both ways comes with the Play Store version.

If you always want one direction, write a PC → Phone tag instead, and share videos the other way. Phone → PC tags come with the Play Store version.

Still stuck?

Send me an email with your phone model, your Android version and the Carrio version, and I'll take a look.

Carrio

Carrio moves the YouTube video you're watching from your Windows PC to your Android phone, with a tap or a button. Share a YouTube video to it on your phone, and it opens on your PC. It can send Chrome's front tab to your phone too.
