Continue a YouTube video from your PC on your phone

You're halfway through a video in Chrome on your Windows PC and need to get up. Tap your Android phone on a tag, or press Open on phone in Carrio, and it carries on in the YouTube app right where you were. Your PC pauses itself.

How it works

  1. Play the video in Chrome on your PCKeep it in the tab at the front. That's the one Carrio reads.
  2. Tap a tag, or press Open on phoneTap your phone on a PC → Phone or Smart tag. Or open Carrio on your phone and press Open on phone (tapping the video's card works too).
  3. It carries on in the YouTube appYour phone opens the video at the same spot, and your PC pauses.

With a tag, or without

With a tag

Wake your phone and tap it on the sticker. You don't need to open anything first.

Without a tag

Open Carrio on your phone and press Open on phone. It's one more step, and you can try it without buying anything.

Doesn't YouTube already do this?

Sort of. If you're signed in on both devices with watch history on, YouTube usually picks up roughly where you left off, and that's handy.

Carrio is about the moment you switch. One tap opens the video on your phone straight away, at the point you're at, and pauses your PC. You don't need to be signed in on the PC, and you don't have to go looking for the video.

Other ways to do it

There are a few, and they all work. Here's how they compare.

  • Copy a link with the time. In YouTube, choose Share, tick Start at, and message the link to yourself.
  • Chrome's Send to your devices. It needs the same Google account in Chrome on both, and it sends the link without the time.
  • A QR code extension. Some Chrome extensions show a QR code with the time in it, which you scan with your phone each time.
  • Casting. Great for a TV, but the video stays on the other screen rather than coming with you.

Carrio's for when you want it to be one tap.

Good to know

  • It works with Chrome on your PC, and reads the tab at the front. If the video's in a background tab, Carrio asks you to bring it forward.
  • Your phone and PC need to be on the same home network.
  • It can land a second or two early, because YouTube decides exactly where playback starts.
  • Going this way needs no special permission on your phone.

Questions

Does it start at exactly the same spot?

From your PC to your phone, very close. It opens where you were, sometimes a second or two earlier, because YouTube decides exactly where playback starts. From your phone to your PC, a shared video starts at the time in its link if it has one, and from the beginning if it doesn't.

Can I keep the video playing on the PC after sending it?

Yes. Switch off "Pause here after Open on phone" in Carrio's settings on your PC.

Does it work away from home, or on mobile data?

No. Your phone needs to reach your PC on the same network, usually your home Wi-Fi. That's also why there's no account or server: the two just talk to each other.

Do I need NFC tags?

No. Open on phone is a button in the app (or tap the video's card), and going from your phone to your PC is your phone's Share menu. Tags make it one tap without opening the app first, and a couple of things live on tags for now, like Current tab and Smart. I'd grab a pack, but you can try the main thing without one.

Give it a go

It's free, and you can try it with the button before you buy any tags.

Carrio

Carrio moves the YouTube video you're watching from your Windows PC to your Android phone, with a tap or a button. Share a YouTube video to it on your phone, and it opens on your PC. It can send Chrome's front tab to your phone too.
