Move a YouTube video from your phone to your PC

If you started a video on the couch and want it on the big screen, tap Share in the YouTube app and pick Carrio. Chrome on your PC opens that exact video.

It works the same for a YouTube video open in Chrome on your phone. If the link has a time in it, the video starts there.

How it works

It goes through the Share menu your phone already has, so your PC gets the exact link and never has to guess which video it is.

  1. Tap ShareIn the YouTube app it's under the video. In Chrome it's in the ⋮ menu.
  2. Pick CarrioIt's in the list of apps your phone shows. The first time, you may need to scroll to find it.
  3. Chrome on your PC opens itCarrio sends the link to your paired PC. The video starts at the time in the link if there is one, and from the beginning if there isn't.

And that's it. There's nothing to allow first, because sharing doesn't need any special permission.

YouTube videos only, for now

Share sends YouTube videos, from the YouTube app or from a YouTube page in Chrome. Other pages are coming. Until then, if you share an article or a map, Carrio tells you it can't send that yet, and nothing goes to your PC.

Going the other way, a Current tab tag already sends whatever page is in Chrome's front tab on your PC to your phone.

Moving it versus mirroring it

Mirroring your phone's screen to your PC keeps your phone busy, and the picture is only as good as the connection. Carrio opens the video in Chrome on the PC itself, in full quality, and your phone is free again.

If you're watching on a TV and want your phone as a remote, YouTube's own casting is the better fit.

Coming later

Open on PC comes with the Play Store version

The Play Store version, when it's out, will also see what the YouTube app is playing, so you won't need to share it. Press Open on PC in Carrio, or tap a Phone → PC or Smart tag, and the video carries on in Chrome on your PC where you were, while your phone pauses.

To see what's playing, Android needs Carrio to have notification access. In some countries, Play Protect blocks apps from websites that ask for it, so the version on this site leaves it out.

What that permission will read

Notification access is the only way Android lets one app see what another app is playing. The Play Store version of Carrio will only look at the YouTube and YouTube Music apps, and only at the title, the channel and how far into the video you are. That goes to your own PC when you tap, and nowhere else.

Android's warning talks about reading all your notifications, which sounds scarier than this. Carrio won't read them, and the app explains all this before it asks.

YouTube's app only shares the title and channel, not which video it is, so for this your PC has to look the video up, and now and then it shows you YouTube's results to pick from. Sharing never needs that, because the link already says which video it is.

The notification access screen: it reads only the YouTube apps (title, channel and position), sends it to your PC on a tap, and has an Allow in Settings button

Questions

What can I share to Carrio?

A YouTube video, from the YouTube app or from a YouTube page in Chrome. Your phone sends its link to your PC, and Chrome opens it there. Other pages are coming, but for now Carrio tells you it can't send them yet. Photos and files don't work.

Does it start at exactly the same spot?

From your PC to your phone, very close. It opens where you were, sometimes a second or two earlier, because YouTube decides exactly where playback starts. From your phone to your PC, a shared video starts at the time in its link if it has one, and from the beginning if it doesn't.

Does Carrio need notification access?

Not the version on this site. It doesn't ask for it, and sharing a video to your PC doesn't need it. The Play Store version will ask, because it's the only way Android lets one app see what another app is playing, and that's what Open on PC needs. It'll only look at the YouTube and YouTube Music apps: the title, the channel and how far into the video you are. Android's warning sounds scarier than that, but Carrio won't read your notifications.

Does it work away from home, or on mobile data?

No. Your phone needs to reach your PC on the same network, usually your home Wi-Fi. That's also why there's no account or server: the two just talk to each other.

Give it a go

It's free, and you don't need any tags for this one, because the Share button is already on your phone.
