A soundboard you tap

This isn't built yet. It's next on my list, and this page is the plan. Stick NFC tags behind a printed sheet of tiles, give each one a sound from your PC, and tap your phone on a tile to play it. With a bit of setup, your friends in a Discord call will hear it too.

A concept drawing, not a screenshot. The real thing may look different.

How it'll work

  1. Pick your sounds on your PCYour own sound files, whatever you like.
  2. Link each tag with one tapTap a tile's tag and pick the sound it plays.
  3. Tap to playOpen the deck screen, which keeps your phone awake, then tap your phone on a tile.
  4. Stop everything with one tagA Stop all tile cuts every sound at once.

The deck mat

The plan is a printable A4 sheet of 12 tiles, each with an emoji and a name, and a 30 mm NTAG213 or NTAG215 sticker behind each tile. Slide it into a sleeve or laminate it and it'll survive a few game nights.

It's a bit like a stream deck you print yourself.

Getting the sound into Discord

Windows doesn't let one app talk into another app's microphone, so this needs a virtual audio cable. The plan is VB-CABLE from VB-Audio, which is donationware: free, with donations welcome. It installs a driver, so it needs admin rights and a restart.

The plan is for Carrio to mix your mic and the sounds, so you'd set Discord's input to CABLE Output. A setup guide with a live test will come with it.

Already using Voicemeeter, Wave Link, SteelSeries Sonar or Voicemod? Then you'd just pick that instead.

What it won't do

  • It can't press Discord's own soundboard. There's no way for other apps to do that.
  • Your phone needs to be awake and unlocked to read a tag.
  • Discord's noise suppression can swallow short sounds. The setup guide will cover that.
  • It'll be Windows only, like the rest of Carrio on the PC.

Who it's for

  • Tabletop and D&D game masters who'd rather have cards on the table than a laptop.
  • Streamers who like props.
  • Friends messing about in voice chat.

Other soundboards, honestly

Last checked:

  • Discord's built-in soundboard is free and right there in Discord. Clips are short, and you need Nitro to use other servers' sounds.
  • Soundpad is a paid app, and it doesn't need a virtual cable.
  • Voicemod is a voice changer with a soundboard, and it has a phone app you can use as a remote.
  • Touch Portal and Stream Deck Mobile put buttons on your phone's screen.

Carrio's twist is physical tags, and it'll be free.

Want to know when it's out?

I haven't set up a mailing list. If you'd like a heads-up, send me an email and I'll let you know when it's ready.

Carrio

Carrio moves the YouTube video you're watching from your Windows PC to your Android phone, with a tap or a button. Share a YouTube video to it on your phone, and it opens on your PC. It can send Chrome's front tab to your phone too.
